Your Office Visit

Your first visit to Southern Surgical just might surprise you. Our friendly, professional staff practices the idea of “relationship medicine” on a daily basis. Upon arrival, you will feel immediately at ease as our caring caseworkers collect pertinent medical information—insurance information, medical records, referring physician notes, etc. Then, you will meet with one of our expert surgeons.

Following your examination and consultation, the surgeon will recommend the best care option for you. Should surgery be called for, a date will usually be scheduled before you leave. (Only in very rare cases do patients leave our office directly for an emergency surgical procedure in the hospital.)

Things You Should Bring

To expedite check-in at our office, please collect all pertinent health insurance and medical records, as well as any materials given to you by your referring physician. If you have any questions as to what specific materials are required, do not hesitate to call our office in advance: 803-796-8901.

On-Site Vascular Lab

Southern Surgical Vascular Diagnostics offers a combination of highly skilled staff, using a variety of diagnostic equipment to offer a full range of diagnostic vascular ultrasound procedures. All personnel are certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. We are also accredited by the Intersocietal Commission Accreditation of Vascular Labs.

Arterial studies are done to diagnosis the presence of peripheral vascular disease (atherosclerosis) Venous studies are done to diagnosis the presence of varicose veins and blood clots.

These tests are done using special equipment. One is a Doppler stethoscope, to listen for changes in the sound of blood flow. This can help detect a blockage or blood clot. Another is a Duplex ultrasound machine, which includes a Doppler evaluation, but also uses sound waves bounced off red blood cells to create an image. This image shows the size and shape of a blood vessel as well as any blood flowing through it. Blood pressure cuffs are also used to measure the blood flow in the arms and legs. These test are painless and non-invasive.

Accurate diagnosis allows the physician to make informed decisions about treatment options for the patient. (medication, angioplasty, surgery)
